About this Site

“Why Study English” is produced by the English Subject Centre. The English Subject Centre was founded in 2000 as one of twenty-four subject centres of the Higher Education Academy.

The English Subject Centre supports the teaching and learning of English in UK higher education, by publishing resources, supporting projects and organising events. We are a small team based at Royal Holloway, University of London (though, like all of the Subject Centres, we don’t represent any particular university). More information about our work is available at our website.

Several years ago, we published a leaflet “Why [you should] Study English”, which was distributed to schools, colleges and careers services across the UK. The success of the leaflet prompted us to develop this website, providing further information for prospective English degree students. The leaflet has since been replaced by a postcard, a PDF version of which is available for download or you can  request printed copies to distribute in schools or at open days by emailing esc@rhul.ac.uk.

This website was originally written and designed by Nick Ragaz for the Subject Centre. Nick graduated from the University of Toronto (Canada) with an Honours BA in English and History in June 2006. It has since been updated by Subject Centre staff Jane Gawthrope and Brett Lucas.

If you have any comments about the website or postcard, please do not hesitate to contact us. Although we can’t answer questions about particular courses or universities, we will try to answer any questions of a general nature about English studies or Creative Writing.
